Harmonious Movement

The idea that art music and art therapies are new concepts would not be so. The need for these have always been urgently required. The effect of personality was believed in the 1500s to be a result of fluid movement within the body.

Music can influence this movement. A set of information can be collected and provided as a simple table.

Element Primary qualities Humor Temperament Trait      Music Pitch
Fire Dry and Hot Yellow Bile Choleric Angry       High
Air Hot and Moist Blood Sanguine Changeable       Mid High
Water Moist and Cold Phlegm Phlegmatic Easy going       Mid Low
Earth Cold and Dry Black Bile Melancholic Withdrawn         Low

In the case of Melancholy the physical body dominates the remaining entities in strength and power. A pure Phlegmatic is the case where the glands dominate the others. In the state of the Choleric the blood is very strong. The Sanguine temperament is produced when the astral force within the nervous system dominates. No one exhibits a pure temperament. A dangerous condition can result if one temperament is expressed for long periods of time. Rather temperaments change over time throughout the day and night. Art can be used to change these temperaments.

From the above table we can infer a three plane system that can manifest four parts of the divine name. In this case the name is expressed by the four elements, and the four types of temperaments known by the theory of the humors. The three planes describe three groupings of the table. The columns of Elements and Primary qualities are part of the plane called Musica Mundana. The central three columns of humor, temperament, and personality are Musica Humana. The final plane is shown by the column of musical pitch. This is called Musica Instrumentalis.

The work of Ptolemy entitled Harmonics includes the macrocosm twin. Here the plane Musica Mundana is associated with heavenly twin, the macrocosm. This the plane of spirit. The plane Musica Humana is associated the lower microcosm twin. This is the mental plane. The third plane Musica Instrumentalis. This is the physical plane where changes can be employed to return the two planes: Mundana and Humana back to harmony.

Mental states can be paired with musical scales. Ptolemy went further and assigned furor or sometimes called frenzy with Mixolydian. The state of excitement is mapped out to the Phrygian scale. The emotion of pleasure is associated with the Lydian mode. A balanced state of mind with the Dorian scale.

The state of depression is paired with the Hypophrygian. A state of relaxation with the Hypolydian.A state of sleep can be induced by the Hypodorian. Marsillo Ficino developed a theory that one mental state can be induced by playing the correct musical mode. The mental state could be replaced by playing the opposing scale. Our thoughts are more complicated and the influences are many. Thus this theory is difficult to apply. Nevertheless. It is a useful especially in developing a prediction for a musical composition. The timber of the instruments will be hard to predict. The use of strings, base and flute can be different with harp alone.

The use of Plato's Timaeus is useful in music theory as a portion of it deals with the etheric body. Music is able to reach the higher states of the mind through the etheric body.

The Importance of Three Worlds

Our friend here is working on three planes of existence. His spirit world depicts Peony flowers in bloom on a full moon evening. Because his mental world is related by an inversion the moon changes position from left side of the paper to the right side. In addition the scene has been translated to depict a winter scene of plum blossoms. The ability to translate information between worlds is an important skill. It is up to us to develop that innate ability in all of us,. Toward the physical world, where we strive to be the land of paradise, our artist has decided his two higher worlds have conjured a dog.

We go about not realizing that we act upon, or should act upon three planes of existence. Early work on the mind led to the concept that information from three sources was necessary to determine any event. The names for these sources vary from person to person. Some examples of names are 1 ( Divine, Human, Physical ), 2 ( Spirit, Soul, Body ), 3 ( Active, Passive, Equilibration ), 4 ( Providence, Destiny, Will), 5 ( Creation, Preservation, Neutralization). Despite the pervasive appearance of a trinity our thoughts involve four parts. These include will, inspiration, intellect, and materialization. The combination of these laws of 3 and laws of 4 in the science of thought must lead to observations in nature in order for these laws to be taken seriously.  The concept of this can be shown to explain why we must have 12 zodiac constellations and why the the base 10 number system exists. As a consequence of having a three variable component to a final outcome implies that thinking works in four dimensions. The imposition of a law of 4 in turn implies higher dimensions of 5 and even more. Advanced work in neuroscience and robotics is only beginning to explore this area of hermetic science. The figure above is our attempt at explaining how we may model how the mind arrives at its decisions based on the sampling these three worlds. The study of how art can be used to move about these worlds has not begun. Early work in four dimensional space prompted color models of cubes to create models of four dimensional cubes. This shows by color and shadow it is possible to provide entry into a four dimensional world by meditating upon a two dimensional image.

The design of the Tarot card number 20 (Major arcana) is interesting for the image contains a four dimensional sphere. The sphere in this particular version involves combining the wings with the clouds to form one object.

Another version of the design. This version shows the completed circle. The union of the angel with the cloud form the four dimensional circle. Ouspensky in his book, the Tertium Organium, speaks of the four dimensional sphere on page 105. The intended art work on this image is to show a transfer from three dimensions to four dimensions.

The figure above is a four dimensional sphere. This is also called incorrectly a hypersphere. The shading on the surface is crucial to obtain the sensation of a fourth dimension. The ability to learn how to view the tarot key 20 can be practiced by observing how the shading would move. In the case of the tarot the cloud pattern must rotate. The pictures of four dimensional objects must have movement as the higher worlds are not static. There movements contribute to the observed phenomena in nature and supernature. The image in from Tertium Organum chapter 9. The work of Van Manen offers a technique to observe higher dimensions. This is recorded in his article Some Occult Experiences for the Theosophist magazine in 1913, May p249, June p389, and July p581.

The three figures below are drawn as three dimensional representations. Yet the square parallelogram emphasizes three dimensional world at the bottom of the image. The four dimensional image in the sky emphasizes a different world and hence a different world of judging.

will is determined by three worlds. These include the worlds of spirit, mental, and the physical.

Divine inspiration manifests on three worlds.

Intellect requires action on three worlds.

Materialism, and organization must first conquer three worlds.

We take it for granted but the ability for us to arrive at a decision involves a definite route over lands not observed by the physical senses. When considering our ability to repeat what we hear from verbatim we discovery our thoughts add to what we hear and even shift the original meaning. We interpret quite differently. Aspects of higher self make a contribution. You will find yourself actually contributing and creating to what you heard. The ability to focus only on what was heard and repeat that back requires conscious effort at first to train yourself.

Suppose we have an unwanted complement of emotions. This can be fear and anxiety. The use of images and deep breathing exercises have a tremendous impact.

The Awakening from Dreams

Art as a Communicator

If functioned as the language our mind would process the information quite differently. Therefore Art is underutilized in society. We truly fail to realize how a aid to help provide a non-addicting treatment to assist those with Autism. A way to increase the quality of life is right under our very nose. When studying the Viruvian drawing no discussion is made of the border. The picture actually is composed of two figures.  One figure involves having the legs together with the arms held in a vertical position parallel with a horizontal earth. This is shown as a square border. With Autism it is important to deal with round geometries. This includes music and painting along with architecture. Our world larger embraces this cubic structure represented as a two dimensional square. The development of sensor fields in the shape of a sphere mimic the necessary geometry depicted in the sketch. The second figure may show another trajectory position when the legs are spread and the arms are raised. The hands of the subject are just above the corner of the square. They are, however; able to satisfy the geometry of a sphere. The figure that can trace out as sphere represents a five pointed star that contains the head pointing up.

The exploitation of sensor devices has never been addressed by the needs of the patient. Now is the time to use what had been developed. We must take advantage of what technology has to offer. This area allows the full benefits of translational medicine to a very old problem. How to execute the will and needs using the current state of the art of the sciences and engineering to assist the user in the creation of their own Art.

The near infra-red spectroscopy devices make it possible to develop smart devices that allow the patient to develop their own Art by way of emotion. By observing art work they in turn can respond to this work with their own Art.A translation of will and emotion into both sound and picture is possible. This means creation of art is no longer the restrictive province of the artist. The utilization as Art for language purposes enables the artist to assume the role of translator and shaman.

These machines allow the patient to learn and express themselves quickly. The therapist will work directly with the patient and see the immediate results of the therapy. The roles of artist and engineer become equally important.

Our emotional outlook can be described in terms of four fluids. The release and suppression and maintenance all depend on our exposure to Art. The rehabilitation and mental growth depend on the utilization of art. We ignore this because we obtain art through passive means. This includes architecture of our life spaces, the plays and films we are exposed to. The use of art can appear even in the advertisements we are exposed to. A dynamic style increases our intelligence and assists in recovery.

The area is wide open. Ways to assist can only occur by taking the first step. The lowly feedback instruments can serve as the sensor. When applied to the suitable device the mind and body can start the movement by thinking. The video above shows the potential of this work in rehabilitation from stroke, brain trauma, and learning disorders.

The Color of Sound

E. R. Jaensch noted children at the age range between 6 to 11 were able to invoke vivid visual experiences both in play and in day dreaming events. The age cut off was deemed through observation. The researchers themselves felt they could not produce the image, yet they could suggest the presence of the image through their verbal questioning. Our ability to work with this phenomenon can be enhanced through the arts. How artistic interactions are devised through the media has not been studied. Eidetic Imagery has great potential in art and neuroscience. The more we work with our minds the more we will enrich ourself. Various stimuli can provide conditions that allow these images to unfold into our working conscious field. The Greek word εἴδωλον is Eidolon and is produced at the interface where thoughts manifest from nothingness. This is why Eidolon refers to the image produced from the thoughts. This spirit image is all we have to go on when examining thought formation in a dynamic event. The eidetic image or copy does not have to arrive to our perception solely from sounds by musical instruments. A combination of sensory and mental events can result in the constructing of this image. Physical research examined the visual stimulus in the 1900-1930 period. What does the image look like? It varies from individual. Research attempts arrive at the interpretation that the image may vary in size, color, and position of the test image suggested. It is the interpretation of the one experiencing the event. Interesting if an image could be suggested verbally can an image be suggested in music to two people in different locations? An important point for therapy is that the early studies provided direct suggestions of the image with the psychologist.
One idea to use eidetic images for the benefits in the fields of therapy, education, and neuroscience can be obtained when two or more senses are used in an art form. The opportunity of tone color introduced in lieu of musical notes lets the mind paint shapes and images with music. This method can allow the translation of color into musical notes by working only with color scales. By allowing the student to map color with notes a unique way of combining sense information provides a way out of trying to go through the intermediate step of converting sound heard in the mind to notes to sound produced by the musical instrument. Like all senses there is a connection to the higher conscious states. Both light and sound have a spiritual source and vibratory nature. These concepts were taken from the Hermetic tradition. The physiological effects that painting and music have on the individual are not known. Apparently they are far from trivial. Working in the areas of music and color it is apparent that one can easily recognize the concept of color over tonal pitch. It is easier to use the mind in creating a map of color ranges than for a map of a music scale. The components involved in both areas are different in the brain. Therefore a ratio of colors can be devised to represent the music scale. It is possible to obtain a chromatic scale using the primary, secondary, and tertiary color schemes. The ability to develop illumination to express emotion is a hallmark of the mind. A way for a therapist to learn the language of art is to realize how art manifests in our thoughts before it is translated and appears for us to experience. In the media of sound the tonic is not the musical note. It is the silence. This is akin to the texture of the drawing surface. To study neuroscience we must resist the response of the senses. The breakthrough will appear when we examine what is not being detected by the instruments. The music symbol of the rest can be used as a composition tool just as the full, half and quarter note. We begin in silence to quell the external thoughts. As the composition takes shape our mind focus on the silence between the sounds. This is how we are able to process shapes from a song. The rest note is the actual tonic. This is because musical scores do not take into account the psychological responses directly. An emotion must be recored for each passage to understand what the intention and the feeling the listener experiences.
Such a scale makes applying music in a rapid approach while avoiding the difficulties involved in transferring to other faculties when using musical notes in a composition.
A method proposed that circumvents the problem of "reading the note" and extends toward the emotions with the intention of which not produces feeling. Other methods are possible a sequence of vibrations can be devised for touch to relate to a note. This can be use for sense deficiency. The method proposed below is by Edward Mayron. His work was inspire by the interest in how an audience could be introduced to color light performances. The composer Scriabin also wished to introduce a musical performance with music an light by including a light organ. The work was called Prometheus: The Poem of Fire.
Source of research paper on Eidetic Image study, 1934.
Example of music with motion that invokes imagery upon listening. It is said there is an organ in the brain that functions like a harp. In addition the ventricles of the nervous system are influenced by our breathing patterns. This has an effect on the transport of the spinal fluid. As we experience art we alter our breathing patterns.

Examples of using color with moving shapes are essential to invoke emotion. A way to do this was envisioned in the mid 19th century. It is composed of moveable prisms, and painted images on glass disks. The visual images are projected onto a large screen by a light source. This device is called the Clavilux. It was devised in 1922 by Thomas Wilfred.

A schematic of the parts that allow the Clavilux to display moving colored shapes onto a screen

With this tool Thomas Wilfred was able to create shapes composed of various colors. These images would change as a the audience watched. The effects were intended to display three dimensional movements. Photographic stills taken from the screen of the Clavilux do not reproduce this phenomena.
A photograph showing the appearance of the image in a stationary position. The shapes and colors change based on the instructions recorded on glass plates. Several types of images are possible by the use of different prisms.
A console was designed so that Thomas Wilfred could compose light to an audience. He called this art Lumia. Based on his researches he was able to explain how certain colors behaved to the viewer. Others had noticed the psychological effect of color. When living creatures were involved the description of the effect became complicated. Yet there are observations that can be used to provide a model for how color interacts with the mind. With the Clavilux it has now possible to learn out both color shape and motion affect us.

The console for the Clavilux allows the Artist to create light compositions right before an audience. The disks on the right are made of glass and have colored paintings prepared earlier. The paintings are identified by Thomas Wilfred as an Opus  followed by a number.

The physiological response to color light was also noted by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. His conclusion was that color required both light and darkness. Color is based on contrast. He felt that the principle players are the sun, the eye, and optical instruments and these were placed inside a diagram for his 1791 pamphlet entitled Beyträge zur optik.

The three aspects of a trinity. The components used in optics involve the sun, the viewer, and the optical instrument. This diagram is taken from his 1791 pamphlet entitled beiträge zur optik.

A presentation of Goethe's findings is provided in four parts by PehrSall.

This video explores Goethe's journey to the study of how we respond to color. In the case of Goethe he noticed that a prism does not split the colors as we assume. The study of color and prisms requires the actual experiment. By reading alone you will arrive at the incorrect conclusion. It is important to act out your plans.

Light differs from a physical world. A description of this other worldly visitor is majestic. This reveals that Light is not from this place. In motion you will sense light to be unearthly. This is the reason why the images constructed by Thomas Wilfred lack sharp images. The motivation behind this work is explained by him in this interview. His Lumina art was never intended as a light show. The purpose was to advance the hour a viewer was in. The word hour refers to a mental conscious state. The diffuse quality of the images reflect how our thoughts form in us. We have something to relate to us that is some activity which the higher self does.
Another example of the Clavilux. This pattern is modified slowly over several events. The colors surrounding the central figure resemble a rainbow pattern and aid the viewer's interest. Composing with light demands the need to work with darkness. This is the tonic for light. First there was darkness, then their was light. To think in this media consider the tonic is silence and darkness. Begin by imagining endless dark space in front of you. So that you are at liberty to build a form. This object will surround you. You can force the darkness to move toward you. Become small, or enlarge so as to pass over you. Imagine that you were sitting inside some fantastic ship allowing you to travel through space. When you add color. Build with both form and motion to increase dimension. No one can derive emotion from a still image. The color of the light must move. The ability for the senses to pick up on motion is a property that relates light from the physical world to the mental world.
By viewing color and shape moving affects how our mind can change mental states. This allows us to realize ourself rather than be caught up in delusion..... Here is David Lynch pointing out there is more to us that we can access. A process in thought is to begin by being still. The entrance to thought begins just as in art. Start with nothing. Then expand and note all the potentials that are possible from your mind.
By using knowledge from different fields new thought can be created to advance our understanding.
