Harmonious Movement

The idea that art music and art therapies are new concepts would not be so. The need for these have always been urgently required. The effect of personality was believed in the 1500s to be a result of fluid movement within the body.

Music can influence this movement. A set of information can be collected and provided as a simple table.

Element Primary qualities Humor Temperament Trait      Music Pitch
Fire Dry and Hot Yellow Bile Choleric Angry       High
Air Hot and Moist Blood Sanguine Changeable       Mid High
Water Moist and Cold Phlegm Phlegmatic Easy going       Mid Low
Earth Cold and Dry Black Bile Melancholic Withdrawn         Low

In the case of Melancholy the physical body dominates the remaining entities in strength and power. A pure Phlegmatic is the case where the glands dominate the others. In the state of the Choleric the blood is very strong. The Sanguine temperament is produced when the astral force within the nervous system dominates. No one exhibits a pure temperament. A dangerous condition can result if one temperament is expressed for long periods of time. Rather temperaments change over time throughout the day and night. Art can be used to change these temperaments.

From the above table we can infer a three plane system that can manifest four parts of the divine name. In this case the name is expressed by the four elements, and the four types of temperaments known by the theory of the humors. The three planes describe three groupings of the table. The columns of Elements and Primary qualities are part of the plane called Musica Mundana. The central three columns of humor, temperament, and personality are Musica Humana. The final plane is shown by the column of musical pitch. This is called Musica Instrumentalis.

The work of Ptolemy entitled Harmonics includes the macrocosm twin. Here the plane Musica Mundana is associated with heavenly twin, the macrocosm. This the plane of spirit. The plane Musica Humana is associated the lower microcosm twin. This is the mental plane. The third plane Musica Instrumentalis. This is the physical plane where changes can be employed to return the two planes: Mundana and Humana back to harmony.

Mental states can be paired with musical scales. Ptolemy went further and assigned furor or sometimes called frenzy with Mixolydian. The state of excitement is mapped out to the Phrygian scale. The emotion of pleasure is associated with the Lydian mode. A balanced state of mind with the Dorian scale.

The state of depression is paired with the Hypophrygian. A state of relaxation with the Hypolydian.A state of sleep can be induced by the Hypodorian. Marsillo Ficino developed a theory that one mental state can be induced by playing the correct musical mode. The mental state could be replaced by playing the opposing scale. Our thoughts are more complicated and the influences are many. Thus this theory is difficult to apply. Nevertheless. It is a useful especially in developing a prediction for a musical composition. The timber of the instruments will be hard to predict. The use of strings, base and flute can be different with harp alone.

The use of Plato's Timaeus is useful in music theory as a portion of it deals with the etheric body. Music is able to reach the higher states of the mind through the etheric body.

Art can be an effective form of therapy. With contributions advance devices can be constructed. Areas include trauma, increase quality of life for autism, and post traumatic stress syndrome, anxiety, and depression can be treated as well. This therapy does not result in drug addiction.
